End Famine is an organization that was founded in 2011 by a group of Somali-American students and young professionals seeking to alleviate the suffering of those experiencing famine and food crises. Our mission is to promote sustainable development, food security and the eradication of famine across the world. We are starting our efforts to end famine with the Horn of Africa which is a region of the world that has faced famine, extreme poverty and chronic food insecurity over the past few decades. Our goals are to:

  • Spread awareness of extreme poverty and famine and mobilize communities to take action.
  • Develop the capacity of Horn of Africa organizations and diaspora communities to implement long-term sustainable solutions for improving food security and self-sufficiency in the Horn of Africa.
  • Advocate for improved efficacy of development practices in the Horn of Africa that will support greater transparency, open government, citizen participation and bottom-up development approaches that strengthen the capacity of local communities.

End Famine is committed to finding solutions to food insecurity in the Horn of Africa. The importance of human dignity must be underscored, for sustainable development only proves successful when the peoples of a region are empowered to be a part of the lasting solution. The hope is that such investments in human capital – targeted at developing local capacity and ownership of efforts to increase food security, sustainable development and self-sufficiency – will produce visible and measurable long term gains. It will take time and it will take much effort, but we are wholly committed to the realization of a prosperous and self-sufficient Horn of Africa.

The need is great, and we cannot do it alone. We are committed to uniting the international community and the people of the Horn of Africa in working to end famine permanently.
